Evelyn Swayne of Kingscote Travel has been voted South Australia’s favourite travel agent.Evelyn Swayne has spent her life giving the world to Kangaroo Islanders –and its clear Kangaroo Island thinks the world of her.
Mrs Swayne has been selected as the South Australian Travel Agent of the Year with the National Travel Industry Awards (NTIA).
More than 5000 votes were cast across South Australia, with Mrs Swayne competing against fierce competition to claim the exclusive title.
With this victory, she will now travel to Sydney in July where the NTIA will announce a national winner based oneach state winner’s votes.
The victory started with just a simple Facebook post in February where she encouraged her customers to vote for their favourite travel agent to be in the running to win a $16,000 cruise down the Mekong Delta in Southeast Asia.
“I only put the post up because I thought it would be a great opportunity for somebody on Kangaroo Island to win such an amazing prize,” she said.
“I didn’t actually expect to win after putting that Facebook post up.”
And this is not just a once off, with Ms Swayne winning the 2015 Supplier’s Choice Award just five months earlier –beating out 147 other worthy opponents from around the country.
It is not surprising Mrs Swayne has continued to impress her customers, as her passion shines through, as well as her knowledge from30 years’ experience in the travel industry including with bus, ferry and airline companies.
“I’m just really grateful to those who voted for me,” Mrs Swayne said.
“I wouldn’t be here without my customers. Thank you for voting for me, and thank you for continuing to come back.”
Four of the seven state finalists were Traveller’s Choice agencies, which Mrs Swayne says is because independent agencies tend to create a better relationship with their customers.
“It’s much easier to maintain a relationship with a customer when you’re independent,” she said.
“They can keep coming back knowing they’ll get somebody who already knows what they like.”
