And organisers have left nothing to chance, with hundreds of free activities on offer at the increasingly popular KidsFest Shellharbour festival.
All the old favourites plus a few new events will feature in the free week-long children’s festival running from May 15-21.
Festival artistic director Ann Lehmann said with more than 50 events, KidsFest is the largest community run free week-long festival for children, their families and carers in NSW.
Two cooking activities are new for 2016, with the ninth festival edition also including launching the Paint Shellharbour Red mascot.
Ms Lehmann said organisers were also excited about the Shades of the Illawarra project involving local students making handprints on bunting to imaginatively portray various animals, birds and sea life.
“These shades can continue to be used by the community for various gatherings and celebrations,’’ she said.
Mr Lehmann added Belonging was the 2016 festival theme.
“There’s an action packed program that gets kids and their families out in nature, creating, playing and making new friends with hundreds of free activities at 50 festival events across Shellharbour City.’’
