Picture: Rob Gunstone OUTSTANDING young cricketing prospects Brody Couch and Tommy Jackson have been selected for an elite squad.

The pair are part of a 40-man Victoria Country under 17straining squad.

The squad will train for the first time in June and will be trimmed along the way.

The final team will be selected ahead of the national championships which will be held in Brisbane from September 26 to October 6.

Former Australian Test player Matthew Elliott has been named as head coach of the team.

Elliott said he is lookingforward to his second year at the helm.

He said he will look to use the experience of last year to help withthe upcoming season.

“It’s a huge advantage to have seen it, touched it, and know what it looked like last year,” said Elliott.

“Having been there, it’s nowabout using that information to help the boys better prepare for this year.

“There’s the potential there for the boys to be as strong a group as last year in terms of sheer talent.

“Then it’s just a matter of how well they prepare over the winter and how well they play when they’re away at the carnival.

“The boys put an enormous amount of pressure on themselves to perform, so it’s important to get them to relax and enjoy the time away too.”

Tommy was part of the under 15s team that competed at the championships in February.

Dunkeld’s Lachie Field is the other Western Waves representative in the Victoria Country team.

This is the second year both a Victoria Country and Victoria Metropolitan team will represent the state at the titles.

Tommy and Brody performed brilliantly in 2015-16 at both junior and senior level.

Tommy played a starring role in Woodford’s division one Warrnambool and District Cricket Association (WDCA) premiership.

In the grand final against Port Fairy, Tommy made 72 to help the Eels to back-to-back flags.

Brody made the WDCA division one country week training squad and finished the season with 375 runs in the top grade for Nirranda.
